The town of Montejaque is situated 689 metres above sea level and covers 45.46 square Km., including part of the Nature Reserve "Parque Natural de Grazalema". It has a population of 1,044. The limestone big rocky areas and cavities give the landscape of Montejaque a unique charm. There are two turnings you can take from the main Ronda-Sevilla Road (A-376) to get to Montejaque. Firstly, you can take the first turning, 2 Km. after Ronda which will take you through the village of Benaoján, or you could take the more direct route via the MA-505 which provides spectacular views. The closest train station is at Benaoján, on the Bobadilla-Algeciras line, 2 Km. from Montejaque.
Apart from its rich landscape, the archaeological sites and areas of botanical interest, the area surrounding Sierra de Libar is exceptional. Another place worth mentioning is the area near the old dam on the river Gaduares. This river is literally swallowed by the caves of Hundidero-Cueva del Gato, and then reappears 4 Km. later to join with the river Guadiar. These caves are of great local importance and are commonly known as Cueva del Gato. |
